There are powerful forces opposed to the Intrepid's crossing, and the most dangerous foe of all may lurk deep within Meralda's own heart.
If you've a taste for airships and intrigue, magic and more Mug, then climb aboard the Intrepid and dare the vast Great Sea…

I really liked this book, but not as much as the first book.Meralda stood out as a heroine for me because so much of what made her wonderful was her intellect, her compassion, and other aspects of her personality that normal women could relate to. Magic was something to be studied and practiced, manipulated with skill that she had learned and not something that was just dropped in her lap. Meralda was, in my opinion, one of the few protagonists that had earned her title. She didn't just scrunch her brow up really hard and mutter a "Kamehameha."
ITTY BITTY SPOILERS BELOW
While labeled "unmagic" in this installment, the power that Meralda is wielding is still, very clearly, MAGIC. Not as it is portrayed in this series, but in the way that writers have a tendency to write themselves into a corner and then need a way to get their characters out of trouble. Meralda's use of unmagic was just... disappointing to me. Where was my smart, compassionate heroine? Jumping around in dream-storms and talking to smartass ghosts (whose NAME CHANGED, by the way), apparently.
Some aspects of the book were great. I loved it when Meralda started to change. The sudden, uncontrollable ability to summon random objects was amazing. However, I would have loved to see these kinds of changes in Meralda as a sign of growth, both for her and the fantasy world we're exploring. Instead, it's this weird (kind of poorly explained) power that the staves just dumped on her.
Honestly, overall I really enjoyed this book. I wouldn't be complaining about the parts that bothered me if the first book hadn't set such a high standard. "All the Turns of Light" was very entertaining and kept me reading for hours at a time. It's just when you compare it to the beautifully woven plot and character development of the first novel that my jaw starts to clench in frustration.
I will definitely be reading the third installment, and I truly hope that it runs closer to the first book. Because... you know. It was amazing.

All The Turns of Light Paths of Shadow Book 2 edition by Frank Tuttle Children eBooks Reviews
Fun story, Frank Tuttle always delivers stories without the war, gore, and horror that is the stock in trade of fantasy writers right now. He actually works at putting together a plot. imagine that! I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because I think it sagged a bit in the middle, and the whole book is set in only one location, which I think is a bit claustrophobic. That said, I will gladly read the other proposed installments in this series( 2 more) just to get Mug's comments on the subject.Ever talk to houseplants? Well, this one talks back, Don Rickles style, and it's a hoot. Keep on flying, Mug!
What can I say..the magic is strong in this one. What an amazing follow up to Paths of Shadow. The story line was strong and magical and certainly contained a flair of drama.I did find the story a bit unsettling at times, but suspect that that is exactly what the author intended. Lots of "strangeness" left open to be explored in future books and I am looking forward to reading them. Just a touch of romance to keep us interested in all the other characters as well - sure there is also still a story to be told - Donchen's past is bound to be interesting. I truly enjoy Frank Tuttle's writing - I would recommend this series to other fantasy readers.
A satisfying read and decent follow-up to All the Paths of Shadow. At first, I was like, yea! an airship! but this turned to oh, they're still on the airship about 3/4 of the way through. That's the problem with "travel" stories of course, the characters remain stuck on the ship for the entire voyage. It's not that there wasn't plenty of adventure along the way for Mage Meralda and Mug, but I found that I missed much of the background about Tirlin and the Realms that featured in the first novel. And the Gaunt-Giant thing was really just a bit weird at times to me. I enjoy this series quite a lot, so I hope that once our characters reach the Hang homeland they have a little more space to explore new things.
I was won over by Frank Tuttle's first book of this series, All The Paths of Shadow. He introduced us to a world run by magic and he created amazing characters that immediately won my heart. I love how his magic is based on math, how there's a strong female protagonist, and his "creations" with Mug and all the fantastical equipment astounded me in their clarity and their depth.
BUT, I was blown away by Book #2, All The Turns of Light. In my mind, it surpasses Book #1, which I thought would be a difficult to do. He's taken Meralda and put her in a difficult situation, one where normal mages might fail, and he's created a tale that is non-stop action. I had to catch my breath so many times and I was astounded by all the different turns this book took. His characters are flushed out beautifully and range from funny and snarky, to smart and sneaky, to loyal and fearsome. I would highly recommend this series. Well done, Frank!
Thank goodness that our intrepid author was unable to follow the southern "way" of writing and went with his fabulous imagination, because one is never too old to enjoy a delightful fantasy full of improbabilities, that keep old ladies up at night reading with the kindle under the blankets and hoping they dont wake up the cat or the hubs. I can see that I have several more books I will need to buy before I can let the cat sleep quietly through the night. And another thing to love about Mr. Tuttle's writing is the lack of errors, in grammar or spelling.....hmmmmm.....Well it is hard to tell; since these two books are taking place in another realm, and many other languages. Nevertheless it is delightful and and I hope all the other books that he has written are as wonderfully full of love, and whimsy and such delightful characters that will not be soon forgotten.
